ARTS EDUCATION FOR CHILDREN

For many years I taught children from pre-K to high school in a variety of acting classes, including musical theatre, improv, and Shakespeare. I was a co-owner of a musical creation company for children called Three Legged Chair, Inc. where we offered camps dedicated to the theatrical creative process. We guided children to write stories based on the issues close to their hearts, to develop characters based on what their bodies needed to express, and to find their unique voice in songwriting and singing. These musicals were my absolute joy.  I also ran a private coaching business working with middle and high school students who were auditioning for performing arts schools.  In NYC, I taught with Avenues: the World School, City and Country School, the Convent of the Sacred Heart,  Wingspan Arts (Director of the Wingspan Summer Conservatory Elementary Program-3 years), Peridance, TADA Youth Theatre, and Girl Scouts of America. Previously, I served for two years as Assistant Director for The Young Company High School Summer Conservatory with the Orlando Shakespeare Theatre.

As an arts educator, Katie fosters growth in the person as much as the performer. No matter what her students go on to do in their lives, her goal is to help them learn to participate in the world as artists: seeing opportunities to innovate, change, and create something new that wasn’t there before.
